implications of urbanization, the author discusses three recent representative examples of urban warfare:
Beirut, 1982; Mogadishu, 1993; and Grozny, 1994-95. In each case study, he examines the organization,
equipment, and training of the forces involved, and draws conclusions about what types of military

systems, munitions, and force structure were effective, and why. The remainder of the article draws
together lessons from these case studies and from other accounts of urban battles in an effort to
understand what is needed to improve military performance in this environment. He concludes that
greater effectiveness will require changes in organization and equipment; more important, it will also
require a change in a military organizational culture that has largely ignored the challenge of fighting an
asymmetrical adversary on urban terrain.

Rowe, Richard. "Safety in Numbers," Airports International, May 1996, 13-16.

Sanz, Timothy L.. "Nuclear Terrorism Bibliography: Nuclear Terrorism: Published Literature Since
1992," Military Review, 77, No. 4, July-August 1997, 139-48.
In compiling this extensive bibliography of articles and books on nuclear terrorism, the author used the
research sources of a multitude of data bases, CD-ROMs, and indexes. A large part of this literature on
this topic addresses the security of nuclear weapons in the former Soviet Union. Six other sections of the
bibliography include works on threat assessments, threats by nation states, security of nuclear facilities,
countermeasures/prevention, legal aspects of the problem, and World Wide Web sites. The bibliography
includes a synopsis of publications of special relevance to defense officials.

Schwartz, Daniel M. "Environmental Terrorism: Analyzing the Concept," Journal of Peace Research,
[London], 35, No. 4, 1998, 483-96.
Although the term "environmental terrorism" has found its way into North American politics, media, and
academia, the concept remains ambiguous. The author asks when is it appropriate to call environmental
destruction "environmental terrorism." He argues that the term has been widely misused. He devises a
taxonomy that allows one to systematically discern the types of environmental destruction that can
legitimately be labeled "terrorism" and those that can be labeled "environmental terrorism."
